Talcott Mountain
Simsbury, CT
Trailheads, measurements, times, distances, and maps are all approximate and relative to the hike(s) as shown below.
The Yellow Trail
Route: Summit Ridge Drive, Yellow Trail
Paved roadwalk was dry and snow free. Yellow Trail had a coating of snow all the way to Heublein Tower. A few minor icy spots, but no need for traction.
Huge bang for the buck on this one. Lots of nice cliff lookouts along the way on this gradual trail (more of a woods road). Heublein Tower was closed for the winter, but is very impressive to look at. Never seen anything like it on a New England mountain before. Presumably there are panoramic views from the tower, but with it closed, there are still excellent views to the west.

The Yellow Trail trailhead
Heublein Tower
Looking northwest from Talcott Mountain
Directions to trailhead: From US 44 west of Hartford, take Route 185 northwest. Summit Ridge Drive will eventually be on the left in Penwood State Forest. In winter months, the first portion of the road may be plowed, however the balance of it is gated, resulting in a short walk to the trailhead.
