Mt. Everett Mt. Race
Mount Washington, MA and Sheffield, MA
Trailheads, measurements, times, distances, and maps are all approximate and relative to the hike(s) as shown below. "Summit" photos may in fact not be at the actual summit - but instead at the best nearby vista.
Near the beginning of the Race Brook Trail
The first part of this hike was dry and pretty quiet - encounted no one until I made it to the falls. Once hitting the Appalachian Trail South, things became a little bit muddy. There is no sign announcing the ascent to Mt. Race or the summit. As a result, the trail seems to go on forever, though most of that section is very flat. The summit is excellent, however. With the exception of Mt. Everett blocking some of the northern views, one can see in all directions.
Though a few hundred feet lower, the summit of Mt. Race has much better views than that of Mt. Everett. There are a few halfway decent views from the site of the old firetower, as well as some decent views from an eastern lookout. On the whole, however, the views don't come close to those of Mt. Race.
The descent was pretty busy, especially beyond the falls, as a lot of midday tourists were finally done with breakfast and lunch. Upon returning to my vehicle, there were people waiting for parking spaces in the undersized parking area.
