Kinsman Mountain (South Peak)
Easton, NH, Lincoln, NH
Trailheads, measurements, times, distances, and maps are all approximate and relative to the hike(s) as shown below.
Looking down the Kinsman Ridge Trail
Route: Reel Brook Trail, Kinsman Ridge Trail, (South Kinsman), Kinsman Ridge Trail, Reel Brook Trail
A different type of approach to South Kinsman. The Reel Brook Trail provided generally good footing up to above Old Kinsman Notch. From there, we dropped into the notch, from where there were excellent views courtesy the high tension power lines.
The trail then dropped to the new Eliza Brook Shelter area, then crossed a stream and ascended with decent footing along some small pools and cascades.
Things became a bit more steep and rough on the way to Harrington Pond and then above it to South Kinsman (with a few minor scrambles), however the views were quite nice along the way.

Directions to trailhead: Take Route 116 3.7 miles north from Route 112. Take a right (on a left curve on Route 116) onto a road marked with a hiker sign. Head down this dirt road for 0.6 miles, then take a left into a field where the Reel Brook Trail trailhead is located. The last portion of this may be difficult for vehicles with low ground clearance.
