Looking down the Red Ridge Trail
Route: Moat Mountain Trail, Red Ridge Trail, Moat Mountain Trail, (North Moat Mountain), Moat Mountain Trail
While I had been planning to hike a small peak or two, I changed my mind in route and headed up to the Diana's Bath trailhead.
Wanting to make it back at a reasonable hour, I jogged the first two or so miles of the Moat Mountain and Red Ridge Trails. Thanks to decent footing (though there were some blowdowns to hop over on the Red Ridge portion) and reasonable grades, I was able to make decent time to the Red Ridge Link junction. From there, the grades were still fairly gradual until a brook crossing. Thereafter, the Red Ridge Trail steepened and roughened up a bit (including crossing a quasi-slide), providing some nice views.
After a few brief open areas, the trail eventually reached the vast open ridge area, where the were superb views. Rocky and somewhat steep, it reminded me of a more tame version of the South Baldface ascent in Evans Notch.
Now on the Moat Mountain Trail again, things were rather grown in. Though just over a mile, this section seemed to drag on as the trail worked its way over a few subpeaks. In addition, there were a few scrambles that would certainly be little fun on a wet or icy day.
Though a bit cloudy overhead, the views from the summit were excellent in all directions. After taking in the views for a bit, I continued down the ledgy Moat Mountain Trail, eventually reaching the Attitash Trail junction. From there, I jogged my way to the trailhead, making it back before sunset. Certainly a workout, but a nice hike nonetheless.
