After a day of skiing, we headed up to Ensign Peak for a quick sunset hike. With temperatures climbing above freezing in Salt Lake City, the first half of the trail turned into a deep mud pit. There were stretches of frozen granular and ice, but not enough to warrant continuous use of light traction. Mild temperatures made for good sunset viewing, while the lack of vegetation allowed for a descent without needed a headlamp.

Directions to trailhead: From the State Capitol, take East Capitol Boulevard uphill. Near the top of the road, take a left onto Ensign Vista Drive. The Ensign Peak Nature Park will soon be on the right. There is limited streetside parking.
