The Aspen Grove Trail in Primrose Cirque at sunrise
Route: Aspen Grove Trail
After waiting nearly a week for a somewhat reasonable weather forecast, I decided to give the mountain I was most looking forward to climbing a go. Starting before sunrise, I initially found myself on the wrong trail due to a lack of signage in the dark. Returning to the parking lot, I found the proper trail and was on my way into Primrose Cirque. Interestingly enough, significant portions of the first mile or so of the trail were paved.
The cirque was a fantastic place to watch a sunrise, as the various topographic angles were easily seen from the numerous switchbacks on the trail. Eventually reaching the slope of Roberts Horn, I passed by the first snowfield - quite a sight in late August!
Eventually reaching a plateau, I passed by a few more dramatic bowls and soon found myself at Emerald Lake and the shelter. The trail then crossed some scree as it climbed above Timpanogos Basin with some narrow, no-fall areas. After a steady climb, the trail merged with the Timpooneke Trail.
The trail then dropped onto the west side of the ridge as it ascended the rocky slope of the mountain with some exposure not for the weary. Reaching the summit, there were fantastic views in all directions. There were also massive cliffs just feet away, making for uneasy movement whilst trying to get photos.
After a lengthy summit stay, I descended via the same route, experiencing the lower cirque in daylight for the first time. Easily the most scenic hike I've been on thus far.
