Evans Notch Trail. (U.S.F.S.)
Follow the valley road N. to Carleton’s as described under Basin Trail. Immediately after crossing Carleton Brook (Basin Brook of U.S.F.S. map), the path enters the field on the R., over a barbed-wire fence. It follows the bank of the brook, passes through a gate, through a short stretch of woods, and then crosses diagonally a large pasture. At the furthest corner it comes into an old wood-road on the W. bank of the Cold River, which it follows upstream. About ¾ m. further on an A.M.C. sign on the L. indicates the path to East and West Royce Mountains. Continuing in same direction (N.) the trail passes under the impressive cliffs of East Royce. It then swings N.E. to Evans Brook where the U.S.F.S. Haystack Notch Trail leaves on the R. There is a government sign here reading “3 ¼ m. to Hastings.” A telephone wire follows the trail from near where it strikes Cold River to Hastings, whence the Wild River Trail, here an auto road, leads to Gilead. For reverse route see Border Mountain Section.
Distances. Carleton’s to Mt. Royce Path 1 ½ m. (45 min.); to Hastings 7 ½ m. (4 hrs.); to Gilead 10 ½ m. (5 hrs. 15 min.).

Evans Notch Trail (W.M.N.F.) enables walkers who are willing to forgo a number of good views to avoid 1 ½ m. of Evans Notch Road. At the point where Basin Trail turns N.W. to the old Carleton Place continue N. across a small bridge and turn R. (sign) along the bank of a brook. Cross a large pasture (targets) and follow an old wood road on the W. bank of Cold River. Evans Notch Link (W.M.N.F.) soon enters R. from Brickett Place Guard Station across an elevated foot-bridge. About ¾ m. further on an A.M.C. sign on the L. indicates the path to East and West Royce. The trail enters the Evans Notch Road about ½ m. E. of the height-of-land on the road.
